The recommended treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) as stated by the NICE guidelines is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy also known as CBT.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

The philosophy of CBT is that it is never the situation that creates a person emotional distress, but the meaning that one attaches to the situation. What we have discovered is that people who suffer with OCD tend to be more emotionally sensitive than most others. This is one trait that all OCD sufferers appear to have in common.

In general CBT the therapist will identify your hot thoughts and examine your belief system that is contributing to the type of OCD fear that you may have.

It is crucial that the sufferers irrational core belief is identified correctly and challenged. This is only part of successful treatment for OCD. Another crucial aspect is for the sufferer to understand the nature of OCD and be equipped with skills to conquer it.

An important factor that needs addressing also is the heightened level of arousal that the person suffering with OCD will be feeling and the obsessive worry alongside the intense feelings also.
